How to Play Merge Tactics
Merge Tactics works differently than normal Clash Royale. You buy troops from a shop and place them on your board. Once the round starts, your troops fight automatically until one side wins. You don’t control them during battle, so smart planning before each round is crucial.

Buying and Managing Troops
At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see three random troops available for purchase. Each troop costs elixir, and you can see your total elixir on the right side. Click on any troop to buy it, and it will appear on your board automatically. If your board is full, troops go to your bench instead.
The bench is storage space for troops you want but can’t fit on the board yet. Remember that benched troops don’t give you any trait bonuses. Only troops on the board count toward your team composition.
Leveling Up Your Troops
Upgrading troops is essential for winning in later rounds. Troops can reach 4-star level, but 3-star is your realistic goal for most games.
Here’s how troop upgrades work:
- 1-star to 2-star: Need 1 additional copy (2 total)
- 2-star to 3-star: Need 2 additional copies (4 total)
- 2-star to 4-star: Need even more copies (rare)
Higher level troops deal more damage and survive longer. Even a perfect team composition will lose without upgraded troops in the final rounds.
Troop Placement Strategy

Placement matters just as much as your team composition. The basic rule is simple: tanks in front, ranged troops in back.
Put your tanky troops on the front line to absorb damage. Place ranged attackers in the back corners where they’re safer. Split your ranged troops between both corners so they don’t all get swarmed by enemies targeting the back line.
How Damage Works
At the end of each round, the loser takes damage equal to the number of surviving enemy troops plus 1. If your opponent has 3 troops left when you lose, you take 4 damage total.
Everyone starts with only 10 health, so games move fast. You can’t afford many losses, which makes every round important.
All Traits Explained

Traits are special bonuses that activate when you have multiple troops of the same type. Here’s what each trait does:
| Trait | Troops Needed | Effect |
| Ace | 2/4 | Your highest star troop becomes Captain. Captain gets +30% damage (60% at 4). When Captain kills enemies, all troops get +20% hit speed for 4 seconds. |
| Assassin | 3 | Assassins dash to enemy back line. They get +35% critical damage and chance. |
| Avenger | 3 | Avengers get +30% damage. |
| Clan | 2/4 | Clan troops get +30% max HP (60% at 4). At 4 Clan, non-Clan troops also get +30% HP. |
| Goblin | 2/4 | Get a free random 2-elixir Goblin next round. At 4 Goblins, 60% chance for 3 or 4-elixir Goblin instead. |
| Juggernaut | 2/4 | Troops behind Juggernaut get 15% max HP shield for 8 seconds (30% at 4). Juggernauts get double shields when behind each other. |
| Noble | 2/4 | Front line troops take 20% less damage, back line deals 20% more (40% at 4). |
| Ranger | 3 | Rangers get +15% hit speed after each attack (caps at 15 attacks). |
| Thrower | 3 | Throwers get +1 range and deal more damage from distance. |
| Undead | 2/4 | Highest HP enemy becomes cursed and loses 25% max HP (50% at 4). When cursed troop dies, Undead troops get +20% damage. At 4 Undead, two enemies get cursed. |
Essential Tips for Beginners
Match Modifiers: From Silver tier and up, each game has random modifiers that change gameplay. Check the ranking screen before matches to see what’s active.
King Tower Options: You start with one King tower type but unlock a second one as you progress through the game.
Ranking System: You gain rank by finishing in the top 2 of your match. You also earn crown rewards for every round you win during the game.
Cross-Mode Rewards: Your standard Clash Royale card levels don’t affect Merge Tactics. However, playing Merge Tactics gives you rewards to use in regular Clash Royale modes.
Focus on learning one or two trait combinations at first. Experiment with troop placement in early rounds when mistakes don’t cost as much. Most importantly, don’t panic if you lose early. The game rewards consistent top 2 finishes more than occasional wins.
