Things to Account for When Buying a Dog

Buying a Dog

If you are thinking about getting a dog, then this is great, but at the same time, you also need to give some thought to the care that they need, and what you can do to try and give them the best possible life. If you don’t know how to go about doing this, or if you’re not sure if getting a dog right now is the right move for you, then take a look below.

Do you Have Time?

One of the main things you need to account for when getting a dog is time. Your dog can’t be left at home for hours at a time, as you don’t want them not to be able to go to the bathroom, and you also want to make sure that they have the company they need as well. During your working hours, you need to consider how long your dog will be left at home for, and if you can organise them to go to doggy day care. If you can’t do this, then you at least need to make sure that you are arranging for someone to come and sit with your dog during this time, as it’s the only way for you to ensure that your dog is well-cared for and that they aren’t struggling with things like isolation. If you have an intelligent dog, then you also need to dedicate time to spending time with them playing games. You need to give them a lot of mental stimulation, and you also need to make sure that they are getting walked enough for their needs.

Planning Around Them

You also need to make sure that you are willing to plan your life around your dog. If you love to go on holiday then this is great, but if you like to go to places where your dog cannot go, then you really do need to try and account for this, by making other arrangements. If you’re not willing to do this then this is a big sign that you’re not ready to get a dog, and you may need to pause the idea until you feel as though you can accommodate their needs.

Care and Wellbeing

Another thing you need to do is take care of them. You need to make sure that you are signing them up with a vet, and if they have dietary needs, that these are met. If you are ever in a bind, or an emergency, you can hire a 24/7 emergency vet to come and see your pet, which is great. WIth that said, you do need to make sure that they are up to date with their vaccinations, and that you are making sure that you are taking all the right steps to try and make sure that you are setting them up for success. This is especially the case if you intend to send them to doggy day care during the day, as being around other dogs will increase the chances of them getting ill.
